  • 1 lb skirt steak or flank steak trimmed
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
For the Shrimp
  • 1 lb large shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
For Assembling
  • 12-16 small corn or flour tortillas
  • 1/2 red onion finely diced
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • 1 avocado diced
  • Salsa of choice (pico de gallo, salsa verde, etc.)
  • Sour cream or Mexican crema (optional)
  • Lime wedges for serving

Equipment

  • shallow dish or zip-top bag
  • bowl
  • large cast-iron skillet or heavy-bottomed pan

Method

Preperation
  1. Combine garlic, lime juice, olive oil, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper in a dish or bag. Add steak and marinate for 30 minutes at room temperature or up to 2 hours in the refrigerator.
  2. Toss shrimp with olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until coated; set aside.
Cooking
  1. Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Sear the steak for 3-5 minutes per side for medium-rare; remove, cover with foil, and let rest for 5-10 minutes.
Assembly
  1. Add seasoned shrimp to the same hot skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes per side until pink and opaque.
  2. Warm tortillas over a gas flame, in a microwave, or a dry skillet until pliable.
  3. Thinly slice the rested steak against the grain for tenderness.
  4. Fill warm tortillas with sliced steak and shrimp, then top with red onion, cilantro, avocado, salsa, and optionally sour cream or crema. Serve immediately with lime wedges.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider grilling the steak and shrimp instead of pan-searing. Adjust the spice level to your preference by adding more chili powder or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the marinade and shrimp seasoning. Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the steak or shrimp; cook in batches if necessary to ensure a good sear and even cooking.
