Sloppy Joe Preparation
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat, then add ground chicken and cook until no longer pink, draining any excess fat.
- Add chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet, sautéing for 5-7 minutes until soft, then stir in minced garlic for one minute until fragrant.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, chicken broth, tomato paste, Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, dried oregano, Worcestershire sauce, and optional brown sugar.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes to thicken and deepen flavors, stirring occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper; add a pinch of cayenne pepper for more heat if desired.
Serving
- While the mixture simmers, lightly toast the hamburger buns.
- Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture onto toasted buns and add your preferred optional toppings.
Notes
For extra spice, increase the Cajun seasoning or add a pinch of cayenne pepper. Customize your sloppy joes with your favorite crunchy toppings to add texture and flavor.
