Main Ingredients
  • 8-10 slices day-old white bread or sourdough, cubed
  • 1 lb breakfast sausage, browned and crumbled
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
Optional Add-ins
  • 1/2 cup diced onions (sautéed)
  • 1/2 cup diced bell peppers (sautéed)

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes and spread half into a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Layer half of the cooked sausage and 1 cup of shredded cheese over the bread, then repeat with the remaining bread, sausage, and cheese.
Mixing
  1. Whisk together eggs, milk, dry mustard, salt, and pepper in a large bowl, incorporating any optional sautéed vegetables.
  2. Pour the egg mixture over the layers in the baking dish and gently press the bread to submerge it.
Chilling & Baking
  1. Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  2. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) in the morning and let the casserole sit at room temperature while it preheats.
  3. Bake for 45-60 minutes until golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For best results, allow enough time for the casserole to chill overnight. You can customize this bake with various vegetables or different types of cheese.
