Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can (14.5 ounce) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 ounce) tomato sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 ounces pasta (e.g., rotini, penne, elbow macaroni)
Optional Garnishes
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese optional, for serving
  • Fresh parsley chopped (optional, for garnish)

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Dutch oven

Method

Cooking Steps
  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven, then brown the ground beef, breaking it up until cooked through, and drain excess grease.
  2. Stir in the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking for 3-5 minutes until the onion is softened and translucent.
  3. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, water, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper, then bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Add uncooked pasta, ensuring it is mostly submerged, then cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until pasta is al dente and liquid is absorbed; stir occasionally.
  5. Remove pot from heat and let it rest, covered, for 5 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken and flavors to meld.
  6. Ladle into bowls and, if desired, garnish with shredded cheddar cheese and fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the Italian seasoning. You can also customize the pasta by using your favorite short pasta shape. Ensure to stir the pasta frequently while simmering to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot. A quick and easy weeknight meal that the whole family will love!
