Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet and sauté the ham, mushrooms, and onion until softened and lightly browned, about 7-8 minutes.
Assembly
- Evenly scatter the cubed bread over the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Spread the cooked ham, mushroom, and onion mixture over the bread, then top with an even layer of shredded Swiss cheese.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, dried thyme, black pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg until well combined.
- Carefully pour the egg mixture over the ingredients in the baking dish, gently pressing down any floating bread pieces.
Baking and Serving
- Bake for 40-50 minutes until the casserole is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the casserole stand for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For best results, use day-old bread as it absorbs the egg mixture better, leading to a less soggy casserole. You can also prepare this dish the night before and refrigerate it, then bake in the morning.
