Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup diced cooked ham
  • 1.5 cups sliced mushrooms
  • 0.5 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 6 slices day-old bread, cubed
  • 1.5 cups shredded Swiss cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1.5 cups milk (whole or 2%)
  • 0.5 tsp dried thyme
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • nutmeg Pinch

Equipment

  • baking dish
  • large skillet

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet and sauté the ham, mushrooms, and onion until softened and lightly browned, about 7-8 minutes.
Assembly
  1. Evenly scatter the cubed bread over the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  2. Spread the cooked ham, mushroom, and onion mixture over the bread, then top with an even layer of shredded Swiss cheese.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, dried thyme, black pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg until well combined.
  4. Carefully pour the egg mixture over the ingredients in the baking dish, gently pressing down any floating bread pieces.
Baking and Serving
  1. Bake for 40-50 minutes until the casserole is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  2. Let the casserole stand for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For best results, use day-old bread as it absorbs the egg mixture better, leading to a less soggy casserole. You can also prepare this dish the night before and refrigerate it, then bake in the morning.
