Method
Prepare the Dough
- Combine water, butter, 1 tablespoon sugar, and salt in a saucepan, bringing the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat until the butter is melted.
- Remove from heat and add all-purpose flour at once, stirring vigorously until a smooth dough ball forms.
- Transfer the dough to a mixing bowl and let it cool for about 5 minutes.
- Add vanilla extract and the egg to the cooled dough, then mix thoroughly until smooth and sticky.
- Transfer the prepared dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
Air Frying
- Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) and lightly spray the basket.
- Pipe 1-2 inch dough pieces into the air fryer basket, ensuring space between them, and lightly spray the churros.
- Air fry for 8-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy.
Finishing Touches & Dipping Sauce
- While the churros cook, combine the remaining 1 tablespoon granulated sugar and ground cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
- Immediately transfer cooked churro bites to the cinnamon-sugar mixture and toss gently to coat.
- For the optional chocolate dipping sauce, whisk together cocoa powder, maple syrup, and milk until smooth, then serve with warm churro bites.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Ensure your air fryer is not overcrowded to allow for even cooking and crispiness.
