Ingredients

Main
  • 9 cups Rice Chex or Corn Chex cereal
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • cups powdered sugar
  • Red or pink gel food coloring (optional, for pink/red buddies)
  • Heart-shaped sprinkles

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Rubber spatula
  • 2-gallon zip-top bags
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or wax paper

Method

Preparation
  1. Measure 9 cups of Chex cereal and place it into a very large bowl, then set aside.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter; microwave for 30 seconds, stir, then continue microwaving in 15-second intervals until smooth and melted.
  3. Stir the vanilla extract into the melted chocolate mixture until well combined.
  4. Pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal in the large bowl and gently fold with a rubber spatula until the cereal is evenly coated.
  5. If desired, divide the coated cereal into two large zip-top bags; add 3/4 cup powdered sugar and food coloring to one bag, and the remaining 3/4 cup powdered sugar to the other.
  6. Seal each bag, leaving some air, and shake vigorously until the cereal is completely coated with powdered sugar and color is evenly distributed.
  7. Spread the muddy buddies onto a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool completely.
  8. Once cooled, combine the white and pink/red muddy buddies and mix in heart-shaped sprinkles.

Notes

For an even coating, ensure the cereal is spread out in a single layer on the baking sheet to cool. You can adjust the amount of food coloring to achieve your desired shade of pink or red. This recipe is easily scaled up for larger gatherings.
