Before Baking
- Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Tear or cut bread into 1-inch cubes and spread an even layer in the baking dish.
- Evenly sprinkle cooked sausage and diced bell peppers over the bread cubes.
- Generously sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the meat and vegetables.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.
- Carefully pour the egg mixture over the layers, ensuring all bread is moistened; gently press down.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
Baking
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) the next morning.
- Remove from refrigerator, uncover, and sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup shredded cheese.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes until golden brown, eggs are set, and a knife comes out clean.
- Let the bake rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For best results, allow the bake to chill overnight to ensure the bread fully absorbs the egg mixture. You can customize this bake by adding other vegetables like spinach or mushrooms, or different types of cheese.
