- Finely chop the dark chocolate into smaller pieces for even and quick melting, then set it aside.
- In a large saucepan, combine the whole milk and heavy cream.
- Gently heat the milk and cream over medium heat until steaming around the edges, stirring occasionally, but do not let it boil.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat, add the chopped chocolate, and let it sit for 2-3 minutes to soften.
- Whisk gently from the center outwards until all the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth and glossy.
- Stir in the granulated sugar (starting with ΒΌ cup), vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt, then taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
- Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and serve immediately.
Notes
For an extra rich hot chocolate, use a higher percentage dark chocolate. Adjust sugar to your preference and consider adding a cinnamon stick or a hint of cayenne pepper for a unique twist.
