Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 bell pepper (any color) finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 tomato sauce (15-ounce) can
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (or maple syrup)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 6-8 hamburger buns

Equipment

  • Large skillet or Dutch oven
  • Spatula or spoon
  • Toaster or broiler (optional)

Method

Cooking Steps
  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Drain any excess grease from the skillet to prevent the sloppy joes from becoming too greasy.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  4. Reduce heat to medium and stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and chili powder.
  5. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed, and add water or beef broth if the sauce is too thick.
  6. While the sloppy joe mixture simmers, lightly toast the hamburger buns in a dry skillet, toaster, or under the broiler.
  7. Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture generously onto the toasted buns and serve immediately.

Notes

For a touch of heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce. This recipe is also great for meal prep; simply store the sloppy joe mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days and reheat when ready to serve. You can also make this vegetarian by substituting the ground beef with lentils or a plant-based ground.
