Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease an 8x8 or 9x9 inch baking dish.
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into ½-inch thick pieces, then place them in a large bowl.
Apple Filling
- Add granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, and optional lemon juice to the apples; toss to coat evenly.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
Oat Crumble Topping
- In the same bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
- Cut cold unsalted butter into small pieces and incorporate it into the dry mixture using your fingertips or a pastry blender until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the spiced apples in the baking dish.
Baking and Serving
- Bake for 35-45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly and tender.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 15-20 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.
Notes
For best results, use a mix of sweet and tart apples to balance the flavors. If desired, serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
