Ingredients

Bread
  • 1 loaf French bread or Italian bread about 16 inches long
Garlic Butter
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 4-5 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped (optional)
  • salt Pinch
  • black pepper Pinch
Cheese Topping
  • 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese

Equipment

  • oven
  • baking sheet
  • small bowl

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Then, slice the loaf of bread in half lengthwise.
Make Garlic Butter
  1. In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, optional chopped parsley, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of black pepper. Mix everything well until thoroughly combined.
Assemble the Garlic Bread
  1. Generously spread the garlic butter mixture evenly over the cut sides of both bread halves. Layer the shredded mozzarella cheese over the buttered bread, then add the grated Parmesan cheese on top, ensuring the cheese extends to the edges for maximum crispiness.
Bake
  1. Place the bread halves directly onto a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden brown, and the edges are crispy. For additional browning, broil for the final 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
Serve
  1. Remove the garlic bread from the oven, slice (if not already pre-sliced for pull-apart bread), and serve immediately.

Notes

For a milder garlic flavor, use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic. You can also experiment with other cheeses like provolone. If you like a crispy edge, ensure the cheese goes right to the edge of the bread. This recipe is also great with a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a bit of heat!
