Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef 80/20 lean is ideal for flavor
  • 1 package Hawaiian sweet rolls or similar slider buns 12-count
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 8-10 slices American cheese or preferred cheese, like cheddar
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped white onion for topping
  • 1/2 cup shredded iceberg lettuce for topping
  • 1/4 cup dill pickle chips for topping
  • 2 tbsp melted butter for brushing tops of buns
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds optional, for sprinkling
Homemade Special Sauce
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp French dressing or Catalina for a tangier kick
  • 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp paprika

Equipment

  • Oven
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large skillet
  • Small bowl
  • Whisk
  • Cutting board

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat, then drain excess grease. Stir in onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, cooking for one more minute.
  3. Slice the entire slab of slider rolls horizontally, keeping them connected, and place the bottom half in the baking dish. Spread the seasoned ground beef evenly over the bottom rolls.
  4. Arrange American cheese slices over the beef layer, then place the top half of the slider rolls back on top.
  5. Melt butter in a small bowl and brush it over the tops of the slider buns, sprinkling with sesame seeds if desired.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the rolls are golden.
  7. While baking, whisk together all special sauce ingredients (mayonnaise, French dressing, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika) until combined.
  8. Remove sliders from the oven and transfer the entire slab to a cutting board. Separate the sliders and open each.
  9. Add a dollop of special sauce, a sprinkle of chopped white onion, shredded lettuce, and a few pickle chips to each slider.

Notes

For an extra kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the special sauce. You can also toast the sesame seeds lightly before sprinkling for a deeper flavor. These sliders are best served immediately, but leftovers can be reheated gently in the oven or microwave.
