Preparation
- Preheat and lightly grease your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Cooking
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until moistened, being careful not to overmix.
- Gently fold in the finely diced apples until they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.
- Spoon ¼ to ½ cup of batter onto the preheated waffle iron and cook for 3-5 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Carefully remove the cooked waffle donuts and place them on a wire rack to cool while you cook the remaining batter.
Glazing and Serving
- For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk (or apple cider), and vanilla extract in a shallow bowl until smooth, adjusting milk for desired consistency.
- Once the waffle donuts have cooled slightly, dip one side into the glaze, letting excess drip off, then place them back on the wire rack to set before serving warm.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can lightly sauté the diced apples with a pinch of cinnamon before folding them into the batter. Ensure your waffle iron is adequately hot to achieve a crispy exterior.
