Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar), sifted
  • 2-4 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt optional

Equipment

  • medium bowl
  • electric mixer
  • whisk

Method

Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until it's light, fluffy, and pale, which takes about 1-2 minutes.
  2. Gradually add 1 cup of sifted powdered sugar to the butter, mixing on low, then add 1 tablespoon of milk or cream and mix; repeat this process until all sugar is incorporated and desired consistency is reached.
  3. Stir in the vanilla extract and optional salt, then beat on medium-high speed for 1-2 minutes until the frosting is smooth, creamy, and light.
  4. The quick and delicious powdered sugar frosting is now ready for use on cakes, cupcakes, or cookies.

Notes

For a stiffer frosting, use less milk or cream. For a thinner frosting, add more. If using unsalted butter, you may want to add a tiny pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.
